Eren
The information she shared in the
summary of our interview with Semra Eren-Nijhar, who worked for several years
in the House of Lords as an adviser to a peer.
Semra Eren-Nijhar is an author,
poet, sociologist, documentary film maker, commentator and an acclaimed policy
consultant on migration, heritage and Turkish people living in Europe. She is
the Executive Director of SUNCUT Consultancy & Productions.
Semra has
focused from a young age on a number of political and community struggles
locally, nationally and internationally and researched social policies across
Europe and Turkey for more than 35 years, mostly focusing on issues of
heritage, migration, diaspora, women, youth, belonging, memory, literature and the
arts. She has held international photographic exhibitions in different
countries and authored & published 10 books.
Her work
‘London Turks – In Their Own Words’ which chronicles the Turkish community over
the last seventy-five years with photographs, interviews, and portraits in the
UK was the first major work on the Turkish diaspora in the UK and was exhibited
and acknowledged by the Greater London Authority, Mayor of London in 2006 and
in 2007 at the European Union Parliament.
Semra
Eren-Nijhar has researched and created several photographic exhibitions in
Britain, Belgium and Turkey and her work mainly focuses on portraits of people
and individuals.
Semra has
also produced and directed several documentary films, which include the much
acclaimed, ‘Turks in London’, ‘Turkish Youth in London’, ‘Millennium Poet Osman
Türkay’, ‘India alive in London’. Some have been featured on the TRT network in
Turkey and abroad. In addition, she had produced & presented on a weekly
show on Turkish TV channel, a discussion programmes called ‘Avrupa’da Söz Bizde
– Our Voice in Europe’.
Semra is a
distinguished expert on the twice Nobel Prize nominee Turkish Cypriot poet
Osman Türkay and has enabled his work to come to life once again in Europe and
in Turkey. Eren-Nijhar worked for
several years in the House of Lords as an adviser to a peer.
She is the
founder of the ‘Turkish Heritage in the UK’ initiative of the "Turkish
Heritage Day in London" – launched in 2014, London and as well the founder
of the "Turkish Heritage in Europe" which was launched at the
international Bosphorus Summit in November
Her recent
research is on ‘smell & memory’ where she features interviews of people
from different heritage and nationalities, about their olfactory experiences.
Semra’s
work has been recognised through many awards for her outstanding work &
research and is seen as a key influential figure and as a role model within the
UK and across Europe.
